What Are Submodalities in NLP?

Modalities are the broad channels used to represent an experience, such as sight, hearing, and bodily sensation. Submodalities are the smaller characteristics that exist within each of these channels.

A mental image, for example, does not appear merely as an image. It has size, distance, position, brightness, movement, and a level of definition. A sound also has volume, rhythm, location, and tone.

NLP observes these characteristics because two experiences with similar content can produce completely different responses depending on how they were organized internally.

The Difference Between Content and Structure

Content is what happened. It may be a conversation, a separation, a professional presentation, a trip, or any other experience lived or imagined.

Structure is the way this content appears within the mind. The same memory can be seen through one's own eyes, observed from the outside, perceived as a large image, or kept at a distance somewhere in mental space.

NLP works mainly with this structure. The event is neither erased nor replaced, but the way it is represented can be analyzed and reorganized.

The Main Visual Submodalities

In internal images, visual submodalities include size, distance, position, brightness, color, sharpness, depth, and movement. Each characteristic participates in the way the scene is perceived.

An image may appear close to the face and occupy the entire field of view, or it may be distant and reduced. It may also be still, move quickly, appear in vivid colors, or look like a poorly defined scene.

These differences do not have the same meaning for everyone. A large image may increase intensity for one person, while another person may react more strongly to brightness, movement, or proximity.

The Main Auditory Submodalities

In auditory experiences, submodalities are related to the volume, rhythm, tone, distance, direction, and duration of a sound. It is also important to recognize whether there is a single voice, several voices, or only noises.

Internal criticism may be perceived as a loud, fast, and close voice. Another person may hear the same phrase in a slow, distant, and repetitive way, producing a different emotional response.

The identity of the voice is also part of the structure. A person may hear their own voice, remember the speech of someone they know, or perceive an internal dialogue without clearly identifying who is speaking.

The Main Kinesthetic Submodalities

In bodily sensations, submodalities include location, intensity, pressure, temperature, weight, texture, and movement. They help describe what is being felt more precisely.

Anxiety may appear as pressure in the chest, heat in the face, or movement in the stomach. The sensation may also begin at one point, move through the body, or remain concentrated in a specific area.

Identifying these characteristics avoids vague descriptions such as “I feel bad.” The person begins to recognize where the sensation starts, how it moves, its intensity, and what happens when any of these conditions changes.

Association and Dissociation from Experience

A person is associated when they relive an experience through their own eyes. They see what they would see in that situation, hear the sounds around them, and perceive the sensations as a participant in the event.

In dissociation, the person observes themselves within the scene. It is like watching the event from the outside and perceiving one's own body and the environment from the position of an observer.

Association tends to increase contact with the experience, while dissociation can create distance from which to analyze it. However, this response varies, and the choice needs to respect each person's emotional conditions.

How Submodalities Influence Emotional Intensity

The intensity of an experience does not depend only on the event remembered. It is also related to how images, sounds, and sensations are presented internally.

When someone brings an unpleasant scene closer, increases its size, and hears a voice again at high volume, the reaction may intensify. The mind is reinforcing the elements that support that experience.

When the image is reduced, the sound moved farther away, or the speed of a scene slowed down, the response may change. This does not happen because the person denied the event, but because they changed the way it is being processed at that moment.

Applying Submodalities in NLP

The work begins by observing the current experience. A person identifies what they see mentally, which sounds appear, where they perceive sensations, and which characteristics make that content more or less intense.

Next, only one element is changed at a time. The person may move an image farther away, reduce its size, or change the volume of an internal voice, observing which change truly affects the response.

The goal is not to create an artificial alteration that quickly disappears. The application seeks to find a more functional internal organization, test its effect, and determine whether the change remains suitable when the person thinks about the situation again.

How to Observe Submodalities Clearly

Observing submodalities requires attention to the details of internal experience. Instead of merely saying that a memory is upsetting, the person seeks to notice how it appears: whether it is near or far, large or small, bright or dark, quiet or noisy.

This observation makes the process more concrete. The experience stops being a confusing mass of emotion and acquires a structure that can be described more precisely. Once the structure is understood, it becomes easier to identify which elements truly increase or reduce the intensity of the response.

In NLP, this care prevents superficial changes. The goal is not to force the mind to feel something different, but to understand how a particular response is being organized and find a more useful internal way to deal with that experience.
